Time magazine provides a detailed, behind the scenes look at the "back room" deal to get the votes, key Republican votes, to pass the law. It seems that principle played very little part in this event. It was politics, power and egos that ruled the day.
Counsel from His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI
It seems like a futile task but the Pope continues to remind all humans of our God-given responsibilities to help fellow humans. Underlying the issue of hunger, which he talks about, is the question of "how shall we implement charity?" Is it an individual task or should we just mindlessly "turn it over to the state"? If it's the latter, don't we end up with a totalitarian state? If we let the state do all the "charitable" work does any spiritual benefit accrue to the individual?
We must remember that we are under serious obligation to heed the words of His Holiness. See Lumen Gentium, No. 25:
This religious submission of mind and will must be shown in a special way to the authentic magisterium of the Roman Pontiff, even when he is not speaking ex cathedra; that is, it must be shown in such a way that his supreme magisterium is acknowledged with reverence, the judgments made by him are sincerely adhered to, according to his manifest mind and will.

Political Correctness run amok
From the Catholic News Agency we hear this story of the Department of Veteran Affairs trying to prevent prayers in funeral services. Quote from article:
Leu explained that the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American League were told by the Houston National Cemetery director, Arleen Ocasio, not to include prayer in funeral services, unless they received her personal approval by submitting a written copy of the prayer to her.
The National Memorial Ladies faced a similar setback. Ocasio said that the condolence cards given to the families of veterans could no longer include the words “God bless,” nor could the women verbally convey the same message to grieving the families during funerals.

Finally, read about how Fr. Zuhlsforf, a nationally known Catholic blogger came to comment on a CDL article in the Winona Daily News. This was very definitely a collaborative effort by one of our correspondents and some of us locally and Fr Z.
Note that our correspondent could well have been YOU! All it takes is the awareness to notice an attack on the Church and faith and caring to call attention to it and/or write a rebuttal. We can help with editing and submission to the source (Winona Daily News in this case).

A plea to U.S. Bishops: Please love enough to speak of the dangers of homosexuality
BY JOHN-HENRY WESTEN
Wed Jun 29, 2011 18:37 EST
June 29, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – As the same-sex ‘marriage’ debate plays out in the United States, with New York having recently fallen, I can’t help but think that it all feels strangely familiar. Back in 2003 and 2004 Canada went through these same debates.
The methods used by homosexual activists in Canada were actually exported to the United States (first to Massachusetts) and have been similarly successful. However, I cringe to see that the same unsuccessful approach to combating this agenda taken by religious leaders in Canada is being taken by U.S. leaders, with similar results.
To be sure, the efforts of the newly formed U.S. Bishops Conference office for the ‘promotion and defense of marriage’ are commendable. However, they are off target. The slick and beautiful videos they have produced for the promotion of marriage and family life are truly great. Thirty years ago they would have made a massive impact in fighting divorce and the contraceptive mentality.
Today, however, what we need to realize is that in the same-sex ‘marriage’ battle, the fight is not really about marriage. As it was in Canada, in the debates leading up to the passage of our same-sex ‘marriage’ legislation in 2005, the issue is about societal approval for homosexual acts.
Homosexual activists argue the need for ‘marriage,’ but most have no interest in the constraints that such a formalized union would entail in terms of exclusive partnership. However, the leaders among the activists have convinced the movement that they must attain marriage as a societal stamp of approval to homosexual behavior.
It took the votes of three Republicans to pass the New York gay “marriage” law. The report below asserts:
From NY Times:
Behind the scenes, Cuomo, Republican power brokers and the ACLU cut the deal.
Church leaders objected on esoteric grounds and did not join the fray. They did not protect the backs of the ones in the fight. As the Times reported:
POPE: THERE’S PLENTY OF FOOD, BUT TOO MUCH EGOTISM
Addresses FAO on Problem of World Hunger
VATICAN CITY, JULY 1, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is citing the United Nations and other experts in affirming that global food production is capable of feeding the world population. But, he says, millions “do not have their daily bread” because of egotism.
The Pope stated this today when he received in audience participants of the 37th session of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. The session concludes Saturday.
“Poverty, underdevelopment and hence, hunger, are often the result of egoistic behavior that, coming from man’s heart, is manifested in social action, in economic exchanges, in the market conditions, in the lack of access to food, and is translated in the negation of the primary right of all persons to nourish themselves and, therefore, to be free from hunger,” the Holy Father stated.

Veterans sue VA over attempts to censor graveside prayers
Houston, Texas, Jun 30, 2011 / 07:08 pm (CNA).- The Liberty Institute has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Veterans Affairs, after it continuously tried to prevent veterans from including prayers in funeral services at the Houston National Cemetery.
“We do know that this is unconstitutional, this violates their rights. We have brought a federal lawsuit and we hope the government will do the right thing and correct this policy,” said Erin Leu, attorney for the Liberty Institute, in an interview with CNA on June 30.
She said the institute was optimistic that the Southern District Court of Texas will rule in the veterans’ favor and find that the private groups have a “constitutional right to reference God and Jesus in their private speech.”

Dick Houck: Marriage based on children, not love
By DICK HOUCK | St. Paul | Posted: Wednesday, June 29, 2011
Recent letters to the editor allege that support for maintaining the traditional definition of marriage in the eyes of the law is based on fear and bigotry, particularly religiously motivated bigotry. [Which would make resistance to contrary-to-nature unions a... hate crime. Right? That's the next phase, folks.]
However, a closer examination of the institution of marriage and the reason government recognizes it shows those claims are false.
Man and woman naturally complement each other physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. They were made to give themselves completely and fully to each other, for the two to become one. Marriage is merely one man and one woman making a complete and total gift of self to the other, for the rest of their earthly lives, and this is consummated in the act of sexual intercourse, which reflects and echoes this two becoming one in a physical way.
The two literally become “one flesh” and this one flesh union is the sole means by which human life is transmitted. [There are a lot of people trying to change that.] This procreative capacity of marriage is the reason the government recognizes and bestows financial and legal benefits on it that are not bestowed on any other union. Those benefits are given to bind the husband and wife together, to bind the children to their mother and father, and to help the mother and father financially support their children, because children do best when they grow up in a stable home with their mother and father.
Cisco fires Christian consultant because of his faith
By Dick Houck
June 29, 2011
Do not allow yourself to think that the homosexual movement is not out to destroy all Christian principles. We are at war with the devil and his aim is to persecute christians and destroy christian principles and we had better be prepared to be persecuted and even martyred.
From American Family Association:
Cisco fires Christian consultant because of his faith. Tell Cisco Chairman John Chambers that firing Christians based on their faith is discriminatory and intolerant.
